Amount of Travel Required:90%; Shawnee County Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday
Varied hours between 7 am to 7pm; must be able and willing to adjust work schedules based on their clinical case load and the needs of individual clients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Provide direct services to severely emotionally disabled (SED) children/youth and their families.
- Provide direct services based on the philosophies and principles of the strengths model and through shared experience of having a psychiatric diagnosis.
- Promote dialogues on recovery and resilience.
- Teach and model symptom management and model problem solving skills.
- Transitional Age Youth - Activities are focused on skill young adults (16 to 22) need to be independent in the community.
- Assists the consumer and family members or other collaterals to identify strategies or treatment options associated with the consumer's mental illness.
- Provides goal based supportive counseling, solution focused interventions, emotional and behavioral management and problem behavior analysis.
- Participates in and utilization of strengths-based planning and treatments
- Assist the consumer with effectively responding to or avoiding identified precursors or triggers that would risk their remaining in a natural community location.
- Assist youth and families with crisis planning and provide crisis intervention services when appropriate.
- Participation in appropriate meetings for the purpose of case review, case assignments and individual case planning.
- Participate in internal and external networking activities designed to increases the likelihood of meeting the client and family's identified needs.
- Complete clinical documentation (session notes, etc.) in a timely fashion. Peer Support Providers are also expected to stay informed of agency developments by reading memorandums and other agency related written communication.
- Respect and demonstrate ability to maintain client confidentiality.
- Act as an ambassador of Family Service and Guidance Center in the community setting. This may include doing public educational and informational presentations.
- Supports and actively promotes the vision and mission of Family Service and Guidance Center and the philosophy of the strengths perspective.
- Other duties as assigned by respective team leader or supervisors.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education/Licensure: - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be between 18 and 26 years of age.
- Valid driver's license, current auto insurance, a good driving record and a reliable vehicle are required
- Must have sufficient ambulatory capabilities to work with children/youth in the office or community based setting. Requires physical ability to restrain children and adolescents exhibiting out of control behaviors.
- Must be able and willing to adjust work schedules based on their clinical case load and the needs of individual clients.
- Must exhibit satisfactory verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess and utilize effective interpersonal skills to promote teamwork.
- Must collaborate with other team members to deliver optimal services to clients and families.
- Complete a Peer Support Specialist training course within six months of their employment, or attend the first available training after their employment. Peer Support Providers are also expected to complete Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB).
- Must successfully complete a drug screen and a series of background checks including: criminal history, abuse and neglect, motor vehicle report, workers compensation, social security and address link.
Experience: - Provider must self-identify as a present or former client of mental health services and have an understanding and awareness of your own recovery and personal health.

Other Physical Requirements: Peer Support Specialist must have sufficient ambulatory capabilities to work with children and adolescents in the office setting. Position may require the ability to use physical holding (MAB) with children and adolescents exhibiting out of control behaviors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Office and Community-Based working environment; requires flexible schedule; frequent interruptions occur; expected to deal with individuals in crisis; risk of exposure to aggressive and/or acting out (verbal and physical) children and youth, and exposure to low socioeconomic homes and neighborhoods.
